iZotope Ozone 9 is the updated version to Ozone 8 (which is currently available for free, btw). Ozone has been a longstanding plugin that has helped bedroom producers and indie producers to master their own mixes. It’s certainly one of our favorite mastering plugins, and we’re definitely as excited as anyone else for the updated arrival.
Some new things about the plugin – it’s interface hasn’t changed much, which is a good thing for some… many of adhere to the saying “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” However, there are a few new bells and whistles to the plugin that we appreciate, such as the master rebalance, and low end focus. This, in combination with the plugin’s machine learning capabilities (ie, AI) will definitely help you out if you want to polish over a track while not necessarily having the best studio monitors or headphones to work with.
What we continue to love, of course, is the ability to load up our favorite reference track, and then let the AI dial in the levels to match that track. This is as close to getting a professionally mastered track… without having to actually hire a professional.
They’ve also added in some more presets to the collection. In the video above we focused primarily on modern, but there are some new retro-inspired presets with new vintage modules for our song demonstration. Essentially you get all the typical mastering plugins (limiter, EQ, compressor), but in a more vintage style – just for you retro producers out there 😉
Definitely we still think that getting your song properly mastered from a highly trained and experience audio engineer is the way to go for radio ready releases. But all-in-all, iZotope Ozone continues to be a plugin that appeals to many of us producers who who simply want to focus on creating and not so much engineering.
